2027 Chevy Bolt EV – Surprisingly Fast and Roomy, With a Major Tactical Flaw at the Plug

Sticking to our standard operating procedure: we cut the crap, skip the fancy journalist jargon, and give it to you straight. I recently got behind the wheel of the 2027 Chevrolet Bolt EV, and I'll say it right up front—what a surprisingly fun and spacious piece of kit this is. After 19 years in the military—spanning infantry, paratrooper, a stint in the MPs, and serving as a special close protection operator—I appreciate gear that executes its mission without unnecessary bulk, and this EV is exactly that.

Our review unit rolled up in the RS trim. It looks sharp, but honestly, you don't need to shell out the extra cash for it. The RS is basically just about aesthetics and nicer seats. If you’re looking for the sweet spot in the lineup, target the LT trim with a few options checked off. It gives you the same capabilities without paying a premium for superficial upgrades.

What I really like about the Bolt is how snappy it is on the road. Because it weighs about 1,000 pounds less than its bigger sibling, the Equinox EV, it is incredibly nimble. It is a blast to weave in and out of city traffic, and it holds its own when you hit the highway. You step on the pedal, and it goes. On the operational front, the Bolt's 65 kWh battery over-delivered. I wasn't driving conservatively in any shape or form, and I still managed to consistently beat the EPA-estimated range.

However, it’s not all perfect. The Bolt does have a chink in its armor, and it has to do entirely with the DC fast charging logistics. Chevrolet claims this vehicle is capable of 150 kW peak DC fast charging, supposedly getting you from 10% to 80% in 25 minutes. That was not my experience in the field. It didn't matter what equipment I hooked it up to—whether it was a Tesla Supercharger or a high-output Flow charger with a NACS cable capable of 200 kW—the absolute best peak charging rate I could pull was about 110 kW. Because of that hard ceiling, the 25-minute claim just wasn't accurate for me.

But here is where this compact EV wins me back: the footprint and the interior packaging. They absolutely nailed it. You do not get the impression that this is a cheap interior; it feels extremely well thought out and well designed. I love how Chevrolet took plain plastic and broke it up with a textured grain pattern so it doesn't look flat or boring. The front passenger area is incredibly practical, featuring a couple of convenient shelves. Down the middle, there is a large storage bin right at the floor—perfect for stashing larger items like a purse or bag. That floor bin also houses another modular cup holder. The modular design lets you change the size of each one to fit your bottles, giving you the ability to have as many as three cup holders right in the middle of the front.

When it comes to the front seating, there is one small caveat: just like any small vehicle in this class, the seats are kind of narrow for a bigger guy like me at 260 lbs. But where the cabin gets deceptively large is in the back. As a bigger-set guy, the rear seating position really surprised me. The seats are not too low to the floor—the height is perfect—making for a very comfortable riding position, and I still had a couple of inches of headroom left. You get a massive 39.1 inches of rear legroom, which is actually more space than some large three-row SUVs offer in their second row. Your passengers won't feel cramped, giving you all the interior utility you need without the vehicle being massive, cumbersome, and difficult to maneuver.

The Verdict If anyone tries to tell you that you need a massive, heavy SUV just to get a spacious interior and peppy acceleration, this EV proves them wrong. If you want an electric vehicle that doesn't overcomplicate things, delivers snappy acceleration, and offers a deceptively spacious interior in an easily maneuverable package, the 2027 Chevrolet Bolt EV is right on target. Just plan your longer trips knowing the fast charging might not hit that advertised 150 kW peak.

For those who want the raw data, here is exactly what the 2027 Chevrolet Bolt EV is packing:

QUICK ANSWERS: 2027 BOLT EV

What are the key 2027 Bolt EV features? A single 210-horsepower motor, a 65 kWh LFP battery, 421 km (262 miles) of EPA-estimated range, and a surprisingly roomy cabin with 39.1 inches of rear legroom.

What is the 2027 Bolt 0-60 time? About 6.5 seconds — quick enough to feel snappy on the road, and a big part of why this little EV surprised me.
